In perhaps the least surprising note of the summer, ex-Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel has rejected overtures from Southampton. The Saints, who departed with Claude Puel after a single season that seen him reach a cup final, have moved to appoint a new coach in-fitting with their present model. Having seen coaches move on with shocking regularity since their return to the top-flight, though, it’s interesting to see the club make a move to oust their own coach instead of waiting for Liverpool to come in and take him.
Jokes aside, the move for Thomas Tuchel certainly had people talking. However, it looks to be much-ado about nothing as reports claim that he has rejected the role. Having left Dortmund in a bit of a cloud but also on a high following a DFB-Pokal win, Tuchel remains a hot property within the game and for that reason many see him as a good go-to for any club with ambition.
Apparently, though, he does not see a move to England – or Southampton in particular- as the right move. A young coach with wonderful pedigree and excellent ideas, he has the tactical knowhow and understanding of the modern player to thrive in a country like England. Given that other clubs linked with Tuchel in the past include Barcelona, though, it’s no surprise to see him reject an approach from the South Coast.
Tuchel is allegedly waiting for the right move to come along rather than just hopping back on the horse and getting back in the game. While arguably a risky move, it makes sense given the sheer challenge of trying to really take Southampton further. With outgoings likely and yet another rebuild on the horizon, it’s unlikely that any coach could take the Saint higher than they have been in the last few years.
For that reason, we expect the coach to be someone focused on development. Tuchel offers a chance to really build something special, but is likely to have a much more impressive and significant collection of options to pick from as time goes on.
