After an awkward start to the season that seen a preposterous home loss to Burnley and a tough win at Tottenham, Chelsea are in their usual post-title win flux. With every win seemingly being close to the end for manager Antonio Conte, there’s a lot of doubt being cast around the club about what the next steps should be. Is the Italian going to stick around? Or is he on his way out the door at Stamford Bridge?
According to German newspaper Bild, former Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel is being lined up. A talented and intelligent coach who won BVB the DFB Pokal last year, Tuchel would bring a more diverse tactical framework to Chelsea. Given his age and modest career so far, though, would he have enough expertise to help bring around the Chelsea squad to see things his way?
The appointment is seen as an ambitious one in many circles, should Conte leave. As a feud seemingly forms between the hierarchy at Chelsea and the current coach, contingency plans are being drawn up.
A move for Tuchel to a club like Chelsea, though, could be a double-edged sword for both clubs. Bigger coaches have failed than the German, and a bad result in Chelsea could see his managerial CV tarnished before time.
However, the fact that contingency plans are even in place shows that, for Chelsea, it might be more about moving Conte on rather than who is necessarily replacing the Italian. As one of the long running sagas of the summer continues to heat up, though, it’s unlikely that the continued links to Tuchel and other coaches are mere coincidence.
Conte is unhappy with the board, and the board seem to reciprocate their annoyance. What, then, will be the end result?
