For some time now, part of the problem at Southampton has come from between the sticks. While Alex McCarthy does an admirable job, he’s a back-up keeper at this level. Fraser Forster looks finished, too, after some serious injuries have taken a major toll on him.
The Saints, though, have moved quickly to complete the signing of Angus Gunn. The youngster has been an impressive part of the England U-21 setup and starred last season for Norwich City, where his father once played.
Gunn, now 22, has signed for the Saints on a five-year deal following a failure to break through at Manchester City. He was fantastic in the Championship last year, and should give Southampton an extra touch of quality in goal.
With excellent agility and a great eye for shots that would beat most keepers, it will be interesting to see how he does taking the step up to the next level. Another name who is close to a deal with Southampton, too, is Jannik Vestergaard. The Dane enjoyed a decent season last year at Borussia Monchengladbach, and is likely to sign for the Saints for the new season.
By joining Stuart Armstrong of Celtic and Mohamed Elyounoussi of Basel, we will see two very exciting talents join up in a bit of rebuild at St. Mary’s. With the fear of relegation seemingly jolting the club into action following the sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool, though, this summer could prove intriguing for Southampton fans worried about the future of the club.
