Having seemingly vanished from the club prior to their game against Everton, and then not turning up for training, Algerian star and title-winning hero Riyad Mahrez is causing major consternation at Leicester City. According to The Daily Telegraph, he’s set to be fined a whopping £200,000 for failing to turn up for training.
That’s a major issue, and is likely to cause problems with the club hierarchy. The fact he’s stopped turning up for training, seemingly in the belief that the club denied him a move yet again, this time to Manchester City, will surely burn bridges.
The Leicester support have often been very positive about Mahrez, even after previous demands to leave. Having been among their best performers when they won the league, the 26-year-old is desperate to move on by all accounts.
Turning up for training is a must for any professional, though, and his failure to turn up could see him hit with a major fine. While it’s likely that there is no way back for Mahrez into the Leicester team at this point, and it feels like the end of a very happy relationship, some fans may be relieved to see this happen.
Performances have been poor outside of transfer windows and European nights for some time, and has likely played a major role in slowly but surely turning fans against player & player against club. With a resolution impossible now, though, Mahrez must find form before the seasons end or further risk derailing his hope of a big move.
