In what feels like the most Arsenal of transfer sagas, Arsenal are looking set to lose talismans Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil on free transfers in the summer of 2018. With a year to go on their deals each, it appears that Ozil will leave the club alongside Sanchez. While Sanchez may leave this summer, it’s more or less confirmed that this will be his last season if he does stick around.
Ozil, for a while, seemed the more likely of the duo to stick around. Even that seems to have changed, though, as the club begin to start preparing the groundwork for having to move on from two of their most impressive and enigmatic performers in recent years.
Ozil, now 28, looks to leave the club on a free as he cannot find a club who will pay the fee demanded or the wages asked at this moment in time. While interested parties want to take him on when he leaves Arsenal and pay his wages with the large fee that is being suggested, no interested parties want to pay both the fee and the wages.
“Yes, I think in the future you will see it more and more,” Wenger said (Telegraph) when talking about the likelihood of the player leaving on a free.
“Why? Because the transfers are so high even for normal players, you will see more and more players going into the final year of the contract because no club will want to pay the amount demanded. I’m convinced in the next 10 years it will become usual.”
It appears, then, that Arsenal have run out of patience with trying to keep the player, and are confident they would rather get one more season than a reduced fee.
