Having been the go-to for physicality and height in the Manchester United side since David Moyes brought him in as part of his ill-fated reign, Fellaini has somewhat endeared himself to the Red Devils. However, with his contract up at the end of the year, it looks like he is on his way out of the club onto a new adventure.
Jose Mourinho, then, the United manager, has apparently started to eye up Atalanta and ex-AC Milan star Bryan Cristante. Apparently, with Fellaini, 30, heading out the door, Mourinho sees the powerhouse as a suitable replacement for his Belgian midfielder.
Cristante has been excellent this year, scoring an impressive 5 goals so far in across 12 games in the league. Having grown into the young star that Milan fans thought they were getting, the Italian offers another option that United arguably lack in the middle of the park.
Seen as a solid replacement for Fellaini, he offers a new option for United as well as younger, more energetic body in a midfield that feels close – or in some cases past – their peak. Strong in the tackle and great in the air, he would offer a similar approach to Fellaini with his raw power and extensive ability in front of his goal for someone in such a position.
