For a while now, France defender Clement Lenglet has been linked with a move to FC Barcelona. Having been a stand-out at Sevilla since he moved there, a move to the league champions looked nailed on. However, with Samuel Umtiti signing a new deal, French outlet L’Equipe now claim that United are in pole position.
With FC Porto defender Diego Dalot completing a move to United this week, the 22-year-old defender would mark another part of the defensive rejuvenation taking part at Old Trafford. Seemingly tired of the defence he had, Jose Mourinho has been linked with a cadre of defenders.
For Barcelona, though, it might mean missing out on a fantastic defender to make sure they could keep one who is equally as good. With United looking to spread their budget further this summer, it would appear that Lenglet would make a cheaper alternative to £50m-rated Toby Alderweireld. The Belgian defender may leave Tottenham but would represent a huge outlay for a player who is soon to be moving beyond his prime.
At £31m, Lenglet would be a more affordable option without leaving the coffers dry for other much-needed replacements in other positions.
