Just off the back of a bit of a tabloid witch-hunt, Raheem Sterling is on the back pages again. However, this time it’s another off-field issue: contract talks. While, like his own choice of tattoo selection, his decision to sign a new deal is entirely his own, it appears that, if Sky Sports are correct, the 23-year-old England star might have found a bump along the way in contract talks.
With the hope of Manchester City to seal the deal prior to what might be a breakout international tournament in Russia for the England man, a saga could soon develop. Sterling had a contract stand-off with Liverpool in the past, and it’s interesting to see what the next step is for both parties.
Sterling was outstanding last year, with 18 goals in the league en route to romping home for the title. With two years left on his deal, it will be interesting to see how City – and Sterling – deal with the furore that often follows a breakdown in negotiation.
With no plans for fresh talks, though, it might be that a player who many expected to stick around at City comes on the market in no time. Guardiola has shown himself to be no stranger to making a big call, and bombing out the 23-year-old would be just that.
If City wish to protect an asset they paid a substantial for from Liverpool, though, now may be the ideal time to sell.
