Griezmann Delivers Blow to Manchester United

Having been one of the most publicly linked players to Manchester United in recent moves, it sounds like Antoine Griezmann might be staying put. The Frenchman has been among the finest players on the European scene for several years now, and a world-record move to Old Trafford has been rumbling in the press for some time. With it looking less likely that United will make the Champions League, though, needing to now beat AFC Ajax in the Europa League Final to do so, it sounds like the interest of the France international has cooled rapidly.

More interestingly, though, is what this means for Atleti. Having long indicated that he would stay as long as manager Diego Simeone would, Griezmann appears to be angling towards remaining in Madrid. This might mean then that Simeone is going nowhere. Either way, it will be interesting to see where Griezmann stands in the summer. If he stays for a season at the new stadium for Atletico, then Simeone is likely to do the same.

“Yes, I am very comfortable here and now [Atletico president] Miguel Angel Gil Marin has to speak with my agent and we will see what we can do but I don’t see beyond the next game,” he told Cadena Ser (Football Espana)

“I continue at Atletico because I am happy. If I am happy in my personal life, I will be happy in the profession. I love Simeone and I love my friends.

“I want titles, it’s what I want and what I lack. Not individual titles but titles with the team. We want to improve and we are doing it with Cholo and the rest of my teammates.

“My future is not linked to Cholo. I don’t think that if he leaves, I will go. It’s true that last year I called him before signing a new deal because I wanted to continue working with him. The club needs it and I saw that I needed it too.”

While this puts some cold water on the eternal like with Simeone, it’s likely being diplomatic. Such claims are hard to stick to and in football things can change so fast. While United fans shouldn’t put all hope of signing Griezmann out of the window at present, the strikers’ latest words don’t really do much for making it sound like he is ready for a new challenge.
