For some time now, it looked likely that FC Barcelona would get their move. Despite the definitive stance of Liverpool, there was always a belief that FCB would push the transfer for Brazilian international Philippe Coutinho through. Now, though, it sounds as if the club have given up on the chase – for now, at least – and are determined to allow the Brazilian to stay at Liverpool until next summer.
In a major blow for the Catalans, in further proof that they cannot always get their own way, this could create a rather interesting storm for both clubs. Liverpool, after a strong season start, need to find a means of making sure they can integrate Coutinho and get the best out of him. Barcelona need to try and make sure that Ousmane Dembele settles in and can make the most of his ability on the pitch.
At the moment, though, Barcelona need to try and find a balance in a squad that feels increasingly imbalanced. Their signings look to be done for the year and an increasingly painful transfer window for one of the true powerhouses of the game slams shut.
Have they done enough? With Coutinho no longer likely to come in this window, it looks like the Catalans will need to move on from their disappointment and get their season underway once again.
