Having been on the lookout for another forward to rotate or dovetail with Alvaro Morata, English giants Chelsea look set to make a move for Italian international Ciro Immobile, according to The Daily Star. Having been one of the top players in the league this season in Italy, Immobile has re-established himself as the star who won the Capocannoniere trophy with Torino before a failed move to Borussia Dortmund.
Having been at Lazio since 2016, after some odd loan moves around the place, Immobile has begun the season in tremendous form, picking up where he left off last year.
According to reports, the price could be above the €50m mark. Having worked with Chelsea coach Antonio Conte with the Italian national team, the links could be 2+2=5 or it could be genuine. Having scored a glut of goals since he arrived in Rome, though, including 13 in just 10 games so far this year, Immobile has certainly put himself back in the limelight for all the right reasons.
While it would be hard to get Lazio to budge, a large-scale offer for a player who is in his late-20s could make a lot of sense for a club that is known to lack financial firepower. Sitting third at the moment, though, the move might not take place until the summer as Lazio try and chase a Champions League spot that might never have seemed realistic given the total change in transfers at the club in the summer window.
Also, some throw doubt on the idea of the move happening as Immobile would likely place second-fiddle to Morata. Having left Borussia Dortmund and Juventus for not being first-pick, it’s unlikely he would make that same concession again to make a move to London that guarantees nothing.
