As a club that knows the role of the backup keeper is very important, Chelsea have history of good but odd backup keepers. From Carlo Cudicini to Matt Schwarzer, they have signed some odd but proven Premier League keepers in the recent past. They recently completed the signing of arguably the oddest of them all, though: Rob Green.
The ex-England international was once tipped to reach the top of the game, but never quite did. Now, at 38, he’s signed a new deal to go to arguably the biggest club of his career. While not expected to play much, he’s an interesting back-up who should provide the Blues with a reliable deputy.
Joining to be third choice behind Thibaut Courtois and Willy Caballero, it will be interesting to see what Green is able to do for the club. Speaking to the official Chelsea website upon signing, the England man said: “It has been a whirlwind 24 hours. You are thinking about your career and where you want to go and then you get a phone call like this, and it is a short conversation.
“It has been a pretty dramatic time for me and I can’t wait to get started. I am absolutely delighted and it is a thrill and an honour to be here.”
While some might scoff at the idea, Green should offer a reliable and experienced presence between the sticks if needed, and a professional mind-set in the dressing room immediately.
